John Cranko’s Onegin is a 20th-century ballet masterpiece: every major company, from the Royal Ballet to the Bolshoi and American Ballet Theatre, now has it in its repertoire. The ballet is based on Pushkin’s novel Eugene Onegin, a tale of missed opportunities, lost love and bitter remorse: Onegin is a worldly aristocrat who rejects Tatiana, a naïve young girl, much to his later dismay.
