Don Carlo, Verdi’s longest and most ambitious opera, appears at the Vienna State Opera in its four-act Italian version during the 2025 season. The opera explores the public and private struggles of members of the court of King Filippo II during the Spanish Inquisition. Both in its paean to freedom and its musical grandeur, Don Carlo is a tour de force. Among its many highlights are the duets between Carlo and Elisabetta and the confrontation between Philipp and the Grand Inquisitor.
