Manon, Massenet's most popular opera, daringly explores a young woman's sexuality. Only nine years earlier Bizet's Carmen was considered scandalous, bit this work won public approval. Termed an opera comique for its outspoken dialogue, Manon is notably tragic, with a fast-paced story accompanied by exceptionally beautiful music. The score, with its famous arias and duets, is above all a gift to singers and audiences.

Extemely popular in his day, Jules Massenet (1842–1912) was best known for his operas and oratorios. His style lost popularity in the early 20th century, with only Manon (1884) and, in recent decades, Werther and Thaïs (1894) maintaining a place in the the international opera repertoire.
French dramatists Henri Meilhac (1830 –1897) and Philippe Gille (1831 -1901), based the libretto on the 1731 novel L’histoire du chevalier des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut by the Abbé Prévost.
