One of opera’s most original Shakespeare adaptations is set to Benjamin Britten’s atmospheric music, with a libretto taken entirely from the text of the play. Lawrence Zazzo is Oberon, King of the Fairies, and Erin Morley sings his queen, Tytania. The quartet of lovers is portrayed by Margaret Plummer (Hermia), Josh Lovell (Lysander), Slávka Zámecniková (Helena), and Benedict Nelson (Demetrius). Matthew Rose sings the donkey-headed Bottom and Théo Touvet is the mischievous Puck.
Benjamin Britten (1913–1976) was a leading composer in a wide variety of genres, and his operas were considered the finest English operas since those of Henry Purcell in the 17th century. Britten was also an outstanding pianist and conductor.
The libretto is based on the eponymous Shakespeare's play, adapted by the composer and Peter Pears, an English tenor and Britten’s personal and professional partner for nearly 40 years.
