Widely regarded as the most distinguished Czech composer, Antonin Dvořák (1841-1904) is best known today for his opera Rusalka. Dvořák’s other compositions include symphonies, operas, chamber music and piano music. Many of his works were inspired by Slavic traditional music.
The libretto for Rusalka was provided by the poet Jaroslav Kvapil (1868–1950) based on the fairy tales of Czech folklorist and poet Karel Jaromír Erben and writer Božena Němcová.
